A single locked hex code looks consistent on a spec sheet and inconsistent everywhere else: a phone screen at night, a matte business card, a vinyl banner in direct sun.
Mature brand systems have started specifying color as a range with rules — acceptable ΔE tolerance, minimum contrast against paired backgrounds — rather than a single immutable value. That is closer to how the eye actually perceives color anyway.
The irony is that giving teams a bit of controlled flexibility produces more consistent-looking output than demanding pixel-perfect compliance ever did.
