Nullcano is the independent design practice of Steffen Wold — a studio built for dark interfaces, precise identity systems, and writing that treats craft as seriously as delivery.

Working from Innlandet, Steffen has spent the better part of a decade shaping digital products and visual languages for teams that need clarity under pressure: tools used late at night, brands that must hold both trust and edge, and editorial environments where typography does the heavy lifting.

Practice

The work spans UI/UX and design systems, brand identity, web and product design, and motion studies. Recent years have also opened a parallel body of work under the categories of Life and Death — slower, more reflective pieces that sit beside client systems without apology. The same designer; different pulse.

Nullcano favors constraints: limited palettes, disciplined type, motion only when it communicates. The current visual language — bone, blood, signal cyan, scanline atmosphere — is not costume. It is a way of designing for attention, error, and recovery.

Approach

Design is treated as infrastructure. Tokens, components, and documentation matter as much as the first impression. Spectacle is allowed when it earns its keep; systems are required so the work still makes sense six months later.

Collaboration is typically close and iterative: discovery, structure, high-fidelity interface or identity, handoff that a future team can actually use. For selected projects, Steffen also writes publicly about process — glitch as signal, empty states as product surface, and the value of designing absence.

Background

Based in Norway, Steffen works with clients and collaborators across digital product, culture, and research-adjacent spaces. Nullcano remains intentionally small: fewer concurrent projects, more depth per engagement, and a portfolio that shows how decisions are made — not only what shipped.

Outside commissioned work, the studio maintains an ongoing archive of studies and journal entries. That public record is part of the practice: a way to stay honest about tools, taste, and the darker half of making things for screens.
